The sun was dipping toward the horizon when we rounded the point and sailed back toward the McMasters’ dock. Mark Peterson, the property manager, came out of the boatshed and helped secure the boat.

“How was it? Did you guys enjoy your swim?” he asked.

“Yep,” Rickie said, “and this boat goes like a dream. I can’t thank you enough for keeping her in such great shape.”

Mark snorted, “Hey, I can’t take any credit. I’m just the circus director around here who cracks the whip over all the guys who do the actual work.”

Rickie chuckled, “I’m sure it’s your ass on the line if anything isn’t up to scratch.”

Mark winked, “I see you know how the world of the rich and powerful works.”

Then Rickie asked him, “Can you recommend a good restaurant?” He quickly added, “Not the kind where the rich and famous go. Just a nice, quiet place, with seafood or pizza.” He turned to me, “Sorry, I haven’t even asked. Is that okay with you, Tyler? Is there somewhere specific you’d like to go?”

I gazed at him for a beat. Were we back into pretend mode? But, for once, I was so thoroughly-fucked mellow that I quelled my insecurities and decided Rickie really meant it – he really wanted to spend an evening alone with me. I kissed his cheek, “Anywhere is fine with me, as long as you’re there.”

Mark grinned, “Leave it to me. I’ll make reservations and pick you up in an hour.”

“You don’t need to,” Rickie protested. “We can get an Uber or a taxi.”

Mark retorted, “All part of the service.”

Rickie took my arm and guided me back to our cottage. It was just as well because I was walking very gingerly, trying to minimize contact between my pants and my raw skin. I snorted with suppressed laughter and Rickie asked, “What?”

I whispered, “Do you think he noticed that I’m walking like a cowboy who’s been in the saddle too long?”

Rickie murmured, “I’ve got some ointment. When we get to the cottage, I can rub some on for…”

“Oh no,” I said, “I know exactly where that will lead us. Your hands are not touching me again.” I smiled and leaned into him, “At least not for a couple of hours.”

He nuzzled my neck and kissed my cheek.
